Top tips for staying hydrated
Staying hydrated throughout the day is important for our general health, but with busy work schedules and family commitments aplenty, how do you ensure you’re drinking enough water? Take a look at our top tips for keeping thirst at bay as well as the dehydration signs that could have you reaching for the water jug.
Count your glasses
Generally, six to eight glasses of water a day is a good benchmark for reaching your hydration levels. Although this is true, it should be considered a general guide, as factors such as exercise and warmer weather may require you to drink more. If you’re looking to be more alert and sharper throughout the day, fill up that water bottle!
Jazz up your drinks
For some, plain water can feel a little boring. If you’re currently nodding your head in agreement why not try flavouring your water naturally with fruits and vegetables? Sliced cucumber is a firm favourite as it adds a refreshing taste to water, however, we’re quite partial to a sprinkling of microgreens in our glass. Really, anything goes!
Is your tummy really rumbling?
Hunger can sometimes be mistaken for thirst. Before reaching for a snack, try drinking a glass of water first, to ensure your craving is not through dehydration as opposed to hunger. You may find that your hunger pang has subsided after finishing a glass of water.
Nourish your body
Roughly 20% of our daily water intake comes from solid foods, especially fruits and vegetables. Crops such as pea shoots have a moisture content of 93g (g/100g) which all count to hydration levels. A pea shoots salad partnered with other hydrating ingredients such as cucumber, celery and radishes is a healthy and hydrating option. You could easily adapt our Pea Shoots Salad by John recipe by adding a couple of hugely hydrating ingredients.
